Lugo, 4 July 2014.- Xunta de Galicia and Fundación Galicia Europa (FGE), in collaboration with the Galician Federation of Local and Provincial Governments (FEGAMP) and the Council of Lugo, held the conference “Training for local entities on the new EU funding programmes during 2014-2020”, taken place in the headquarters of the Council of Lugo this morning. The opening speech was delivered by the Xunta de Galicia Director-General for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, as well as by the FEGAMP’s Executive Vice President, Alfonso Villares, and the Provincial Councillor Álvaro Santos.

The seminar, aimed at city councillors, civil servants and technical staff in charge of managing EU funds, is set in the framework of a partnership agreement signed in 2013 between FGE and FEGAMP with the purpose of encouraging the raising of EU funds among Galician local entities during the new EU funding period. In this manner, the speakers provided the attendees with a global view of the European funding sources, focusing on the most accessible ones to local entities (structural funds, Erasmus+, Life programme, etc.). In addition, those participants carrying out projects and willing to receive first-hand guidance and advice held individual meetings with experts in EU projects who were also speakers during in the seminar.

During his intervention, Jesús Gamallo emphasized the importance of this conference, reminding the audience that, although Galicia will maintain a significant proportion of structural funds in this new period 2014-2020, it is essential to search for alternative sources of and to reach a position from where we could compete for them under the same conditions as the other EU regions and cities. That is why Xunta de Galicia is supporting a change in the production model, counting on the Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3) in order to turn the Galician economy into one based on innovation and knowledge.
