Brussels, 9 July 2015. - The director-general for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, attended the 113º CoR plenary session. In this meeting, regional and local representatives adopted four opinions, four resolutions and a report on the impact of the opinions that the CoR issues.

The most important debate was about a resolution on improving the functioning of the European Union. The CoR considers that with the actual Treaty, the instruments still offer a big potential to confront the challenges that the EU is facing. The CoR urges to have his competences reinforced in order to deliver a bigger accountability on the EU.

The CoR proposes to participate in a more active way in the legislative process as an observator or increasing the fields in which the consultation is compulsive.

The director-general stated, “we are ready to take advantage of the current possibilities of the EU treaty and also we are ready to participate in a conference to reform the Treaty. Our objective is clear: to approach the functioning of the EU to the citizens and to improve its efficacy”.

In this meeting, several representatives of the EU institutions were also present. Commissioner for the Energy Union, Maros Sefcovic, commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas and the Minister for Interior of Luxemburg, Dan Kersch presented their working priorities.

In this meeting, a resolution on migration was adopted. The CoR explains in this document its opinion on a better way to deal with migration and asylum seekers. Regional and local representatives insisted on the need to strengthen the cooperation with the countries where these immigrants come from.

Members of the CoR also discussed two other resolutions: one on sustainable food and another on the working programme of the European Commission for 2016.

Despite not being on the agenda, regional and local representatives held an important debate on Greece. The members of the CoR being the closer representatives to the citizens, agreed on asking for a quick solution to this crisis in order to recover the liquidity of the Greek Banks and a normal situation for citizens.
