Brussels, 1 July 2015. - The Regional Minister for Economy and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia,
Francisco Conde, launched today in Brussels Oportunius, a complementary initiative to the European Research Council
(ERC) Starting Grant program. Oportunius intends to retain and attract
scientific talent to Galicia in line with the priorities set out in the
Galician RIS3. This proposal is addressed to outstanding European researchers
so that they can develop their career in Galicia and contribute to the
excellence of their research capacities.
The program was launched in a presentation
held in the Spanish Permanent Representation to the EU with the participation
of members of the European Commission, European researches and members of the
European Research Council (ERC).
Conde pointed out that this program places
Galicia in line with the European policies to boost investigation through scientific
talent in order to face the challenges that Europe is dealing with. He also
stated that “in order to create economic growth it is important to support
scientific excellence”.
David Posada, one of the eight ERC
Galician grant holders benefited from this programme also presented his
testimony. He holds two ERC grants and believes that Oportunius helps to boost
the excellence and it helps Galicia to become an attractive place for
researchers to develop their careers.
