Vila Nova de Gaia, 19 June
2015.- The director-general
for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, attended the Commission for Natural Resources
(NAT) meeting in Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal) where his draft opinion on the
future of the aquaculture was discussed and adopted.
The objective of the CoR with this opinion is to identify the barriers
to a good development of the aquaculture and to suggest solutions in areas such
as the obtaining of licences or in the competence for space on the fluvial
banks. Regional and local authorities are the best ones to promote this sector
of great potential to create jobs an economic growth.
Among the measures suggested in the draft opinion, simplification of
administrative procedures and the access to space, the importance to support
innovation and the need to promote local markets are the most important ones.
Nowadays, the aquaculture is at a standstill, despite being an important
complement to commercial fishing. In previous opinions, the CoR has already
support the boost of aquaculture. The CoR considers it a strategic industry able
to create jobs. Promoting this sector can allow the EU to achieve its
objectives in territorial cohesion and economic growth.
Europe imports 70% of the fish consumed. A big amount of that percentage
comes from the aquaculture production and brings questions regarding environmental
sustainability, observance of the fisheries regulation and of workers’ rights. European
producers contribute with their specialization and with a technological benefit.
In this meeting, other two working documents were presented; one
regarding the simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the
other one regarding the boost of rural economy.
Following the NAT meeting, members hold a seminar on rural economy also
in Vila Nova de Gaia. This seminar was focused on measures to promote
innovation and modernisation on the rural economy.
