  • The director-general for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, held a stakeholders meeting on the future of aquaculture
  • Gamallo also met with representatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament

Brussels, 23 April 2015.- The director-general for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, held a stakeholders meeting on the future of aquaculture regarding the opinion in which he is working as a speaker. Gamallo attended the meeting with Juan Maneiro, the chosen expert for this opinion and fisheries secretary-general from the Galician government.

The issues discussed on the meeting will be taken into account in order to enrich the document that will be presented on the next NAT commission meeting prior to the approval on June and the final endorsement at the plenary session in October.

In this context, Gamallo and Maneiro also met representatives from the fisheries commission at the European Parliament and from the Directorate General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs from the European Commission.

With this opinion, Galicia wants the Committee of the Regions to identify the challenges the aquaculture sector is facing in order to find possible solutions. The opinion will focus on important issues such as competitiveness, sustainability or commercialization and distribution.

More than ten European organizations took part in this stakeholders meeting: Seas at Risk, producers’ representatives or the European Aquaculture Society, among others.

In former opinions on aquaculture, the Committee of the Regions had already supported the importance of this sector. Aquaculture helps creating jobs in weak areas, so a decision to boost to this sector will help the EU to achieve more territorial cohesion and more growth.
