O director xeral de Relacións Exteriores e coa UE, Jesús Gamallo

  • The director-general for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, attended the 111º plenary session at the CoR
  • Galicia introduced 11 amendments to an opinion on the future of the dairy sector

Brussels, 17 April 2015.- The director-general for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, attended the 111º plenary session at the CoR yesterday and today in Brussels. Following the approval of the agenda, president Markku Markkula gave a speech. In this plenary session, seven opinions were voted: one on the future of the dairy sector, one about transport, one about the enlargement policy and another one about the Investment Plan, among others.

Before the plenary session, Xunta departments analysed this opinions in order to decide if they were to make amendments. On request of the fisheries and agriculture office, Galicia introduced 11 amendments to the opinion on the future of the dairy sector.

This opinion gathers the consequences of the suppression of milk quotas such as the gathering of the production in bigger companies and the withdrawal from weaker areas like those on the mountains. The speaker asks the EU to adopt urgent measures in order to protect the income of those affected.

With the amendments, Galicia wants to eliminate abusive tactics used by the buyers against producers. The final draft demands more measures in support of the dairy sector.

In order to introduce these amendments, Galicia had the support of other six Spanish regions.
