Galicia takes part in the election of the Committee of the Regions new representatives

  • The Xunta’s director-general for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, attended the 110 CoR plenary session
  • In this new term, Galicia will be part of the commission for Natural Resources (NAT) and the Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External Affairs commission (CIVEX)
  • Local and regional representatives discussed political priorities with the first vice-president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans

Brussels, 13 february 2015.- Committee of the Regions (CoR) held a constitutive plenary session yesterday to welcome new members to this new term and to elect its new president and vice-president.

In this new term, Galicia will be part of two of the six CoR commissions: the commission for Natural Resources (NAT) and the Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External Affairs commission (CIVEX). CIVEX commission covers topics such as Freedom, Security and Justice, Active Citizenship, Constitutional Affairs, Immigration and External Relations Policy.

The Xunta’s director-general for External Relations and with the EU, Jesús Gamallo, was elected spokesperson in CIVEX commission for this new term.

NAT commission covers some important topics for Galicia such as rural development, fisheries, maritime policy or turism. The Galicia-North of Portugal Euroregion is stronger in this new mandate as the Portuguese member Jose Luis Carneiro was elected president of this NAT commission.

In this plenary session, members also elected his new president, the finish Markku Markkula and the new vice-president, the Belgian Karl-Heinz Lambertz.

The vice-president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, discussed political priorities for 2015 with the CoR members. They agreed to work for a better inter institutional cooperation and Timmermans presented the Commission priorities such as the Investment Plan for Europe, more transparency, and a new migration policy for Europe.

Regarding the Commission work program, Galicia pointed out that it is important to take into account those regions, such as Galicia, affected by the demographic change.
